Breast Cancer Screening
Eary detection is the key to survinging any cancer, so getting regular screenings for specific cancers is important.
Mammograms and MRI
Breast MRI
For most women, breast self-exams and annual mammograms are typically effective enough to detect basic breast lumps and help diagnose or rule-out the threat of breast cancer. But for women with dense breast tissue, a mammogram may not provide the degree of detail needed to diagnose a cancerous tumor. For these women, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology is used to create a detailed image of the breasts, even through dense tissue that may otherwise conceal the image of a tumor.
In addition to breast MRI, positron emission technology (PET) and digital mammography are more widely available to women, making the process of diagnostic screening faster, and more accurate. Talk to your doctor to find out if one of these technologies is right for you.
Mammograms
This is still the best general screening tool for breast cancer. For most women, it is recommended that start having yearly mammograms at age 40. But if you've never had a mammogram, you may be a little nervous. What is it like? Does it hurt?
